Golden Knights Celebrate Nevada Reading Week 📚 ✏️
The Golden Knights, and the VGK Foundation, continued their annual participation in Nevada Reading Week as they visited elementary schools across the Las Vegas Valley, from March 2-March 6, to read books to classes and build excitement about reading!
Nevada Reading Week began in 1987 as an initiative started by the Nevada Department of Education, and has helped celebrate reading and promote literacy for over 30 years since. Through specific themed activities and the assistance of guest readers through the years, CCSD and the state of Nevada have helped students understand both the benefits and joy that books bring.
The VGK got the celebration started on Tuesday, March 2 with a trip to Frias Elementary School and Harmon Elementary School. Former Golden Knights defenseman Deryk Engelland got the party started at Frias Elementary, joining classes to read a story before hosting a ball hockey clinic shortly after!
Jesus Lopez, voice of DEPORTES VEGAS 1460 AM joined the VGK Cast at Harmon Elementary later on in the day to read along with students in both English and Spanish!
Over the course of the week, members from the Golden Knights organization and VGK Foundation made their way to over a dozen elementary schools, including appearances at Reynaldo Martinez ES, Mervin Iverson ES, Sandra B. Abston ES, Kathy L. Batterman ES, Staton ES, William R Lummis and more. Players like Brett Howden and Carter Hart joined in on the celebration, reading selections from the “Brady Brady” series of stories about hockey.
The Golden Knights are honored to be a part of growing literacy and promoting the importance and excitement of reading throughout Southern Nevada!
