Mike McKenna Makes Appearance At NHL & AHL All-Star Games
It was a busy weekend for Mike McKenna, the former professional goaltender and Golden Knights broadcaster.
The multi-talented St. Louis native took part in NHL All-Star Weekend in his hometown, and then headed west for the AHL All-Star Classic in Ontario, California.
In St. Louis, Mike played goaltender during the All-Star Alumni Game with fellow stars Cam Janssen, Brad Marsh, Wayne McBean, Ray Whitney, Douglas Murray and Paul Bissonnette.
“There were a lot of former players that I always looked up to and had been around, but to be in the same room with all was pretty special,” said McKenna. “I can actually say it was a big challenge because there was such a disparity in ages and skill sets. I got lit up, that’s what happened.”

After a fun couple of days in St. Louis, Mike headed to warmer weather in Southern California to provide the color commentary during the broadcast of the AHL All-Star Game televised on TSN and NHL Network.
“I’m proud of the fact that I spent a large portion of my career in the AHL and got to know so many people,” he said. “Having the chance to do color commentary live was so much fun. It was in the moment, off the cuff and an opportunity to be creative. Just a new experience that I loved, the adrenaline rush of it.”
While in Ontario, he spent time with Vegas prospect Lucas Elvenes, who owns 35 points (8G, 27A) through 45 games this season.
After a busy five days away from home, Mike had time to reflect on what stood out to him the most between the NHL and AHL All-Star festivities.
“For myself with two young girls, the Women’s 3-on-3 was absolutely fantastic and it’s no surprise,” said McKenna. “I have a daughter that wants to be a hockey goalie, it’s what she wants to do as a job. It’s great for her to be able to see women perform at a level that she inspires to someday.”
